Mt Kooyong Nursing Home – Facilities


Mt Kooyong Nursing Home has been operating under its current management in Julatten, on the Atherton Tablelands, since 1979. The single level, slightly elevated building, is accessible to people of all ages and abilities thanks to convenient ramps, wide verandahs and comfortable stairs.

Mt Kooyong has 28 beds, providing complete residential high care services to its residents. Our comfortable and welcoming home offers a combination of spacious private rooms, with ensuite bathrooms, and communal rooms to cater to all residents comfort and convenience. Each room faces the surrounding rainforest, providing views of the natural landscape beyond. They have indoor and outdoor spaces, which are complemented with ample communal space around Mt Kooyong’s facilities and grounds.

Our facility has a number of internal and external communal spaces, for the enjoyment of residents and their visitors. The Residents Lounge has a wide-screen television and DVD player. Viewing of programs is by concensus. Mt Kooyong also has a library, for the benefit of residents: large print books and audio cassettes are available on request.

Mt Kooyong’s In-House Therapy Department

The care team includes experienced registered nurses and carers who are dedicated to delivering assistance with dignity, compassion and respect. There is a 24-hour nurse on call, to attend to all needs no matter day or night. The in-house team consists of the following:

  • Director of Nursing
  • Registered Duty Sister
  • Recreational / Diversional Therapist
  • Physiotherapy Assistants

These are responsible for organising various activities on a regular basis i.e., music groups, games, BBQ/picnics, news items, bus trips, family days, school concerts and exercise groups.

Mt Kooyong’s Consultative Therapy Department

Mt Kooyong arranges twice weekly visits from a local doctor, facilitating any ongoing medical care and attention, including pain management and wellbeing. Alternatively, residents are welcome to make arrangements to see their own preferred doctor at our facility. In addition, the following consultative therapy staff are available on request, at the recommendation of the Resident’s Doctor or the Director of Nursing.

  • Physiotherapist (fortnightly visit).
  • Occupational Therapist (on request).
  • Speech Therapist (on request/referral).
  • Podiatrist (fortnightly).
  • Social Work (on request).
  • Psychogeriatrician (on request)
  • Dental: Both private and Queensland Health Dental Clinic facilities are available in the nearby towns of Mareeba and Mossman. Alternative arrangements will be made upon request.
  • Optometrist: Optometrical consultation is available through the Queensland Health system or privately. Mr. John Holme provides a consultative and treatment service privately at the Home. Alternatively, other private arrangements can be made upon request.
  • Audiometry: The National Acoustics Laboratory in Cairns provides this service. Transport to such facilities is available upon request, at no charge.

Set amongst a rainforest backdrop, Mt Kooyong Nursing Home provides residents with a peaceful green haven. Julatten enjoys a comfortable, tropical climate. In summer, temperatures range from 16-39 degrees Celsius, in winter it is 3-30 degrees Celsius. There are climate controlled spaces to maximize resident comfort. The approximate driving distance to Cairns is 102km, either along the Port Douglas coast road, or Kuranda Range (via Mareeba).
